A caller reported three people, one of whom had a gun in his hand, loitering in an alley in the 400 block of Meridian Avenue (map) about 6:06 p.m., according to a press release from the San Bernardino Police Department.

Officers responded to the area and located the subjects, who ran east through the alley, south to Foothill Boulevard, then east on that street, the release said.

About 1/2 a mile away, in the 2400 block of Foothill (map), a police sergeant saw the threesome running and stopped his patrol vehicle in front of them, the statement said.

One of the three, a man named Arthur Felder who was armed with a semi-automatic handgun, stopped and turned toward the officer, officials said. The officer saw the weapon and opened fire, striking Felder in the shoulder, buttocks and foot, according to the Police Department.

The sergeant rendered first aid to the wounded suspect, who was then transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical center for treatment, the news release said. Felder was released from the hospital hours later.

A loaded Desert Eagle .40 caliber handgun, with its hammer pulled back and a round in the chamber, was found at the scene, police said, adding that the weapon had been stolen in Phoenix, Arizona.

Felder was arrested on multiple charges including assault with a deadly weapon on an officer, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of cocaine for sales, possession of cocaine while armed with a firearm, participation in a criminal street gang, and a parole violation, authorities said.

The child was removed from the home and the mother, 20-year-old at the home of Kimberly Torres, was booked on suspicion of child endangerment and possession of stolen property, according to a news release from the San Bernardino Police Department.

The arrest followed a May 7 vehicle break-in at West Valley Street and North Stoddard Avenue in San Bernardino, where an off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy’s patrol vehicle was burglarized. Two handguns and other “police-related property” were taken, the release stated.

Later that day, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputies conducted a traffic stop and found one of the deputy’s stolen handguns during a search of the vehicle. The driver, Ramon Quintero, 25, of San Bernardino, was arrested.

Then, on Tuesday, San Bernardino police detectives went to speak to Torres, whose name was on the registration for the vehicle Quintero was driving.

As detectives spoke to Torres at a home in the 2600 block of West Rialto Avenue, her 3-year-old daughter walked out of a bedroom holding a firearm and pointed it at the detectives, the release stated.

The gun was a black semiautomatic pistol with a tactical light attached, police said.

The firearm was immediately taken from the toddler and found to be loaded, according to police. Its serial number showed it was the other firearm stolen from the deputy’s patrol car.

After a search of the home, the majority of the deputy’s stolen property was found, as was another stolen firearm, according to police.

The little girl was taken into the care of Child and Family Services.

Torres was release from custody early Wednesday morning, and Quintero was released the morning after his arrest, inmate records indicated.

The 1,000 full-time positions will be added at centers in San Bernardino, Moreno Valley and Redlands.

The jobs, announced Tuesday, are in addition to the 6,000 positions that the company last week announced it would be filling at centers across the U.S.

The Seattle-based online retailer has more than 50 fulfillment centers — where employees pick, pack and ship orders — across the U.S. The first center in Southern California opened in San Bernardino in 2012, and the Redlands and Moreno Valley centers began fulfilling orders in 2014.

Mayors from the three cities were all quoted in an Amazon news release in support of the company’s local centers.

“Amazon coming to the region last year was an important step in the region’s recovery,” Redlands Mayor Paul Foster said. “Their continued growth and ongoing involvement in the community sends a clear message that Amazon is dedicated to the Inland Empire and, more importantly, that it has found a qualified workforce that makes it want to stay and grow here.”

The new positions are needed to meet growing customer demand, the company said.

Full-time employees receive competitive wages, according to the company, and “comprehensive” benefits that include health insurance and a 401(k) plan beginning on their first day.

The testimony came in a preliminary hearing in San Bernardino Superior Court in the trial of Charles “Chase” Merritt, who is charged with killing Joseph McStay, his wife, Summer, and their sons Gianni, 4, and Joseph Jr., 3. The family disappeared from their San Diego County home in 2010 and were later found buried in shallow graves in the desert near Victorville.

The remains of Joseph Jr., 3, were so minimal that a cause of death could not be determined, San Bernardino County sheriff’s Det. Edward Bachman told the court.

Merritt was Joseph McStay’s business associate and alerted the McStays’ family to the disappearance, Bachman said.

Flames erupted just after 11:45 p.m. at the restaurant, which is located in the 1400 block of East Highland Avenue. It quickly turned into a third-alarm fire, Capt. Jason Serrano of the San Bernardino Fire Department said Tuesday morning.

By the time firefighters arrived at the location, the business was fully engulfed in flames, video from the scene showed.

At one point, crews battling the blaze inside the restaurant had to clear the structure amid fears that the roof was about to collapse, Serrano said.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, but the business sustained $500,000 worth of damages, making it a complete loss, according to Serrano.

Authorities said they believed the cause of Monday’s fire was arson, and responding firefighters saw an adult male walking away from the business shortly after the flames erupted.

Investigators were working to determine who the man was, and they were seeking surveillance video so they could provide a description of him, Serrano said.

Fire officials would not say if any accelerants were found in or near the building.

The blaze was the second one reported at the No Name Cafe this month, authorities said. On July 10, firefighters extinguished a fire that caused extensive damage to the kitchen area, according to officials.

That fire’s cause remained under investigation, but officials at the time had called it “accidental.” The cafe’s owner said he left a pan on the stove in the evening but had to leave the kitchen because of a family emergency, officials said.

The restaurant has been closed since the July 10 fire.

On Tuesday, witnesses said they watched as the blaze consumed the restaurant, a local landmark.

“It a lot of smoke, a whole lot of fire,” said San Bernardino resident Marquise Hockel. “You could feel the heat from the street.”

Police responded to reports of a major-injury traffic collision near avenues East Highland and Del Rosa North (map) around 10:15 p.m. Friday, according to a San Bernardino Police Department news release.

The initial investigation found a Ford Crown Victoria taxi was stopped westbound at a lit intersection when it was rear-ended by a speeding 2002-model Chevrolet Suburban.

The impact caused both vehicles to move into the intersection where one of them collided with a Honda Civic that had entered the intersection southbound and was in the process of making a left onto Highland’s eastbound lanes.

Photographs of the scene showed three badly mangled vehicles, with the taxi appearing as if it no longer had a back end.

Police said a 41-year-old San Bernardino resident who was a passenger in the taxi died at the scene, the taxi driver was transported to a hospital for moderate injuries and the driver of the Honda suffered minor injuries.

Tomeise Ray, 23, of Los Angeles, was taken into custody Friday, the San Bernardino Police Department said in a news release. She was described as the second suspect in the case. Los Angeles resident Curtis Jackson, 21, was arrested on April 23.

The arrests stem from a Feb. 16 incident at a pot dispensary, in the 2800 block of Rialto Avenue, that police said was illegally operated.

After two armed men entered the business about 10 p.m., one of them forced his way into a back room and opened fire on security guard Anthony Victor Pineda, according to the Police Department’s initial account of the crime.

Pineda, a 25-year-old resident of Rowland Heights, returned fire and was struck at least once in the exchange, investigators said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the suspects was wounded in the shootout, police said, and a large pool of blood was found outside the business.

It was unclear if any cash or marijuana was taken in the incident.

Responding officers had to force their way into the dispensary, where people who identified themselves as “volunteers” were at first uncooperative with the investigation, said police Lt. Rich Lawhead.
